Nigeria 2011: NASS Results and Analysis

The first of the 2011 Nigerian Elections which had been earlier postponed finally held on the 9th April, 2011. The Election was anticipated with mixed feelings, experiences and expectations as a result of the recent spate of violence and perceived incompetence by the Electoral Body (INEC). Elections were postponed in 15 senatorial districts and 48 federal constituencies which will be held on the 26th of April. Results have started pouring in as INEC kept their word that results will be announced at Polling units and collation centres and that all results will be available within 48 hours.

From reports from Citizen reporters on the field, it seems the PDP slots in the house has been mostly overtaken by the opposition.

SMALL STEPS (Guest Writer)

By: Joy Ekeledo joybecky57@yahoo.com (Guest Writer)

It is a popular saying that the journey of a thousand miles begins with a step. This saying has become so popular that even a primary school pupil is familiar with it. Despite its popularity, most people tend to shove this aside and carry on in life through cuts and corners.

The urge to acquire riches, fame and the likes of them is on the increase in the young people of today so much that some do not care whose ox is gored, others do not care who is eliminated on their to stardom. The bottom line remains that they get what want.

Undoubtedly, it is a hard truth to know that the first step is the hardest to take and that alone spells the reason why people give excuses on their failure to do things, because it is hard to overcome their inertia, excuses will not seize springing up, so stop giving excuses and start doing something worthwhile because time they say waits for no man.

Dare to begin because nothing great can be achieved except when you must have put that little by little efforts. Most people that have made it in life passed through one rigorous process or the other. Some might have not believed in their ability but because mother idea would always conceive something great, they are a success today.

People who think that they are too big to do little things are perhaps too little to be asked to do big things. You will never do great things if you can’t do small things in a great way because in the face of doing those little things, the road becomes wider and your journey to greatness begins. All difficult things have their beginning in that which is easy, and great things in that which is small.

Successful leaders have the courage to take action even the smallest things around them. The courage to begin is the same courage it takes to succeed. That courage separates dreamers from achievers. You may be disappointed if you fail but the truth is, you are doomed if u don’t try your hands at it.

One of the major differences between people who have momentum and those that do not have is that those that have pay attention to their small ideas and opportunities. The beginning is the most important part of any endeavor. The man that is afraid to begin is perhaps the worst quitter.

The grave yard is mostly regarded as the richest place in the world not because the richest men are buried there but for the fact that the greatest ideas that could have transformed the world are buried there without their impact felt. Never decide to do nothing just because you can only do a little.

Cutting corners does not pay in the long run. The after effect would always leave you with a bitter experience so brace up and act those ideas by taking a step that would turn you around for good.

Election Postponement: A Blessing in Disguise? #Nigeriadecides

It is no longer news that the 2011 Nigeria Elections have been postponed by one week each, due to late arrival of result sheets and other irregularities. According to a press statement released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the new timetable is as follows:
  • Saturday, April 9th 2011 – Senate and House of Representatives (National Assembly) elections.
  • Saturday, April 16th 2011 – Presidential election
  • Tuesday, April 26th 2011 – State House of Assembly and Governorship elections

If you were out and about during the National Assembly (Senate and House of Representatives) elections on April 2nd then you would agree that this postponement is a blessing in disguise.

What I saw at the different Polling Units I visited not only reflected INEC’s lack of preparation but also how some Nigerians seemed passive, as if not ready for the elections. While in some centers, excited voters had to wait hours for INEC officials to arrive, at other centers, INEC officials had to wait for voters! I mean, in a PU where about 1,000 people registered to vote, only 120 voters showed up. The excuse people gave (at least those I asked on the street) was that they do not know who to vote for.

Hopefully, this one-week will enable Nigerian, those who have come of age and who registered to vote, to be better prepared for the 9th, 16th and 26th! It is not time to sit on our hands and look the other way for a messiah!

April is here, Nigerians! #RSVP #Cool2vote #NigeriaDecides

Today I was thinking a lot about my hair. Reflecting on how long it has grown within the past 4 years- shoulder length and still growing! Actually, I remember when I started growing it again- it was during the May 29th inaugural ceremony of late President Musa Yar’adua. The successful transition of government had been so inspiring that it led me to apply the first Relaxer to my hair. Others popped champagne, maybe. But for me, it was taking the giant leap of letting my Afro into a ponytail!

Like it was four years ago, I am thinking metaphorically again. Except now, my hair these past few weeks had been badly damaged by artificial application of hair Relaxer. Or maybe it is the harsh weather? Anyway, as I stated earlier, I am thinking about chopping my hair off, again. And then growing it all natural. So as everyone count down to April 2nd when we would officially kick off the election process in Nigeria, I am counting down to the new experience of starting afresh.

Is that not what we need in Nigeria today? A fresh start? It does not matter who you will be voting for come April 2nd, 9th and 16th, the key thing is to be sure we are voting with our head and heart and not just with our stomach. We should not allow tribalism, ethnocentrism and all the other -ism in our society influence our choice of candidates.

Of what use will it be if we all go out and vote for a particular person to be our government leader if it will result to more youths pounding the pavement for the next four years while the rest of the public wink in darkness?
I don’t know about you but I am tired of applying quick fix-it to my damaged hair. So I am just going to chop it all off and give it a fresh start. Yes, we should allow ourselves go beyond our comfort zone to get what we really deserve.

And just in case you are yet to decide whether to vote or not- if you don’t vote then you loose the power to really effect the change you want to see in Nigerian leadership system. You will also loose the right to complain, if anything goes wrong. And the most shameful of all is that you will loose the privilege to perform your civic responsibility as a Nigerian.

Don’t be a stranger, go out and vote and give Nigeria an opportunity to start afresh! Share your experience at the poll: www.reclaimnaija.net, www.nigeriaelections.org,  REPORT whoever want you to sell your VOTE now! TEXT/SMS- 08135328466

Nigerian youth participate in Info-activism training

On 16 March 2011 in Lagos, Nigeria, twenty nine young communicators, journalists and grass roots organisers attended the one-day Info-Activism training that took place at the offices of Journalists Against AIDS (JAAIDS) Nigeria.
A number of different speakers offered their opinion on the change face of communication. Miss Oreoluwa Somolu, the Executive Director of W.TEC, made a presentation using W.TEC as a model on the different ways they implement projects using new media, and how young change-makers can adapt the new technology into their various projects, irrespective of the digital divide.  READ More Nigerian youth participate in Info-activism training
